NOÉMY GAGNON-LAFRENAIS

La violoniste québécoise Noémy Gagnon-Lafrenais explore le répertoire avec une approche profondément ancrée dans la pratique historiquement informée. En quête d’une expression musicale à la fois authentique et inventive, elle tisse des liens subtiles entre passé et présent. Son jeu se distingue par une « douceur envoutante, tandis qu’elle déploie avec finesse la transformation continue de la rhétorique musicale » (Gramophone, 2023).

 

Noémy est directrice artistique de l’Ensemble Spinoza, qu’elle a fondé avec le claveciniste Christophe Gauthier et la gambiste Margaret Little. Leur  enregistrement des Sonates en trio op.1 de Buxtehude, salué par la critique, a été lancé en 2023, sous l’étiquette Navona Records (USA).

 

Décrite comme une interprète au jeu « vivant, varié et accompli », « cadré avec enthousiasme et solidité » (Le Devoir, 2020) Noémy est invitée en tant que violon solo avec plusieurs ensembles canadiens réputés, notamment Arion Orchestre Baroque, Early Music Alberta et Clavecin en Concert. Chambriste passionnée, elle est membre active de l’Opus Project et du Petit Rien et a cofondé 2024 l’Ensemble Lógos avec le pianiste Joon Oh Kim. Leur projet, La Belle Époque, explore le style romantique français en s’inspirant d’enregistrements historiques du début du XXe siècle.

 

Noémy a contribué à de nombreux enregistrements sur l’étiquette ATMA, collaborant avec Arion Orchestre Baroque, l’Orchestre de l’Agora, Pacific Baroque Orchestra et l’Harmonie des Saisons. Elle est diplômée de la Juilliard School (2015), du San Francisco Conservatory of Music (2013, 2011) et du Conservatoire de musique de Montréal (2009). En parallèle de sa carrière musicale, elle a également obtenu un baccalauréat en génie chimique de Polytechnique Montréal (2024).

Noémy cumule plus de 20 ans d'expérience en enseignement du violon. Elle a été invitée pour diriger des classes de maître et atelier à l'Université de Toronto, à l'Université de Montréal et au Cégep Saint-Laurent. Elle apprécie également travailler avec les étudiantes et étudiants en formation et de contexte socio-économique variés. Elle a enseigné à La Villa Ste-Marceline (Montréal), dans le Music Advancement Program de la Juilliard School (New York), Conservatory in the Schools (San Francisco).

Noémy joue sur un violon Paolo Castello (c.1800) et un archet Bazin, gracieusement  prêtés par M. Roger Dubois et la compagnie Canimex Inc., ainsi qu’un violon Salomon à Paris (c.1757), prêté par M. Gilles Pansera.

Québec violinist Noémy Gagnon-Lafrenais explores the repertoire with an approach deeply rooted in historically informed performance. Striving for a musical expression that is both authentic and inventive, she skillfully weaves subtle connections between past and present. Her playing is distinguished by a « wonderfully sweet sound »  and « she is quick to articulate the music’s ever-changing rhetoric. »  (Gramophone, 2023).

 

Noémy is the artistic director of Ensemble Spinoza, formed of harpsichordist Christophe Gauthier and gambist Margaret Little. Their critically acclaimed recording of Buxtehude’s Sonatas for Trio Op. 1 was released in 2023 under the Navona Records (USA) label.

 

Praised for her « lively, nuanced, and accomplished »  playing, described as « framed with enthusiasm and confidence »  (Le Devoir, 2020), Noémy is frequently invited to collaborate as concertmaster with renowned ensembles such as Arion Baroque Orchestra, Early Music Alberta, and Clavecin en Concert. A passionate chamber musician, she is an active member of Opus Project and Petit Rien. In 2024, she co-founded the Ensemble Lógos with pianist Joon Oh Kim. Their project, La Belle Époque, explores the French Romantic style, drawing inspiration from early 20th-century historical recordings.

Noémy has contributed to numerous recordings on the ATMA label, collaborating with the Orchestre de l’Agora, Arion Baroque Orchestra, the Pacific Baroque Orchestra, and L’Harmonie des Saisons. She is a graduate of the Juilliard School (2015), the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (2013, 2011), and the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal (2009). Alongside her musical career, she also earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Polytechnique Montréal (2024).

 

Noémy has over 20 years of experience teaching the violin. She has been invited to lead masterclasses and workshops at the University of Toronto, the Université de Montréal and Cégep Saint-Laurent. She also enjoys working with students from diverse training backgrounds and socio-economic contexts. She has taught at La Villa Ste-Marceline (Montreal), in the Music Advancement Program at the Juilliard School (New York), and in the Conservatory in the Schools program (San Francisco).

Noémy performs on a Paolo Castello violin (c. 1800) and a Bazin bow, generously loaned by Mr. Roger Dubois and Canimex Inc., as well as a Salomon à Paris violin (c. 1757), loaned from Mr. Gilles Pansera.
